Fife Food Festival is always a blast for the St Andrew’s foodie – and this year was no different! Each year, the festival is arranged as a part of the Raising and Giving Campaign (RAG Week). The three-pound entrance fee went to support the charity Mary’s Meals – a charity that provides meals for the world’s poorest school children.
Cooking with friends and gathering to enjoy a meal is what lies at the heart of good food. It is a coming together of good friends, old friends and new friends. This is what Flora Shedden wishes to highlight with her very first cookbook, Gathering, published this month.
Getting into the holiday spirit, this year I decided to make my own floral christmas decoration using eucalyptus. Eucalyptus is becoming my new favorite interior decorating plant. It has a beautiful matte green color, it’s versatile, and best of all, it smells heavenly.
I assume most students were excited to see how Label would turn out. St Andrews throws a lot of fashion shows, and everyone was anticipating how Label would compare to the likes of Catwalk, Sitara, FS and Don’t Walk. Would it be as good, as big, or as fun? When I entered Club 601 on the night, greeted with a glass of free wine, I realized that Label should not be compared to anything else. Just like the show encourages us not to compare ourselves to others either, but be proud of who we are and what we stand for independently from others.
A good book can place you into a culture without having been there, or enhance it further by travelling and recognizing what the authors meant when they were writing. Some of my favorite holidays have been made even better by having a good book by my side that gives me an authentic insight to the culture I’m experiencing.
The final fashion show before the break is fast approaching. Don’t Walk may be the last, but by no means least. Famous for pushing creative boundaries and recruiting an impressive line-up of talented designers. Victoria Skeie sat down with their Head of Fashion to get a sneak preview of what we can expect this Saturday at Kinkell.

Reif Larsen (1980), is the author of The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet, dramatized by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and I am Radar. He is also this year’s Writer in Residence at the University in St Andrews, which is why Owl Eyes met up with him to talk about the role of an author, and the reality of writing as a profession. You may have seen him this semester from events at the Byre Theatre, if not, be inspired by the interview below to pursue your creative creations.
Autumn is all about change. It is the change in the weather from warm summer days, to fall – which can be warm, windy, rainy and misty, and then sunny again. We see that our emotions change. We may begin to romanticize about autumn- the melancholic beauty of seeing the leaves fall. But then we quickly become melancholic ourselves. If this happens there is only one cure, a good bowl of warm soup. This never changes. Soup is always delicious.
