On The Rocks: open for business

On The Rocks has become the biggest student-run arts festival in Scotland, and if you haven’t heard about it, why not?! It showcases art, photography, film, theatre, dance, fashion, music and comedy from students and the wider community. What’s more, it can claim Sean Connery, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Siobhan Redmond, Crispin Bonham Carter, Joanna Lumley and Simon Pegg as festival patrons.

Even if you didn’t know it, you probably attended one of their events, Sitara fashion show perhaps? Macbeth at St Andrews Castle maybe? Or any of the many music and theatre events up that week in April.

This year the festival will take place from the 5th to the 13th April and it looks set to be better than ever. Wallis Grant, OTR’s Head of Programming has said…

“On the Rock’s 2014 is looking to expand its horizon’s through several different means. One way is through a heritage thread that we are promoting. This means looking at both Scottish and international heritage and incorporating them in our events in whatever creative manner groups choose. We want people to bring to the festival a diverse range of heritage inspired events or pieces that can really embrace where they have come from and incorporate this in creative and innovative manner . Heritage is especially important for us Scottish students and On the Rocks is planning a Scottish heritage night so look out for that.”

On The Rocks provides St Andrews students and the wider community a unique opportunity to showcase their talents with funding and support of a tried and tested organisation. So if you have a film you want to make, a play you want to put on, a portfolio of artwork that deserves to see the light of day, then check out their facebook page and website to see just how easy it is to get involved!

Applications close on the 19th January, so get thinking now.
