There’s no better time than during exams to think about how what we eat effects how we think. High brain function is essential during this time in the semester to sustain our study efforts, and luckily, studies show that there are certain foods that can help with this. During exams we should all consider swapping our usual study snacks for a few of the following foods so that we can help our brains be at their absolute best.
Blueberries- Blueberries are a superfood for your brain! Studies have shown that blueberries, which are packed with antioxidants, not only improve memory, but can also reverse some short-term memory loss, making them a perfect study snack to help you remember everything you need to know.
Avocado- Avocados contain extremely healthy unsaturated fats, which are essential for the growth and protection of the cells of the brain. You’ll definitely be doing yourself a favor if you snack on avocado during revision to keep your brain as healthy as possible for upcoming exams. For ideas, check our Revision Diet Guacamole recipe!
Kale, broccoli & green vegetables- Green vegetables are a great source of Vitamin K, which is known to enhance cognitive function and improve brainpower. Broccoli in particular has been shown to increase memory, so even though green veggies may not be the most appealing food choice during revision, they will help keep your brain sharp and functioning at its best.
Dark Chocolate- Dark chocolate surprisingly has many benefits for the brain since cocoa has been proven to increase verbal fluency and cognitive function, and eating a piece of dark chocolate every day could improve blood flow to the brain. So, there’s no need to feel guilty every time you reach for that chocolate bar during revision, your brain might actually thank you!
