Demijohn: Edinburgh’s Liquid Deli

Stepping into Edinburgh’s Demijohn is like stepping into an apothecary’s store. With bottles piled high to the ceiling, filled with a rainbow of liquids, there is something magical and olde-worlde about selecting a liqueur of choice and watching it being hand-poured into a glass bottle with a cork stopper. It’s like being in an old-fashioned sweet shop, but for adults.

Demijohn is no ordinary bottle shop. Homemade elderberry wine, Seville orange gin and organic cucumber vodka are sold alongside artisan vinegar and chili-infused oils in bottles that hug together, like two pieces of a broken heart. Labels are written across in white marker pen, alongside a personal message, if you wish. The downside is you have to buy the bottle on top of buying the liquid, due to UK law not allowing you to turn up with your own jerry can! However, it’s a small price to pay for a unique taster of the Ferguson family wares.

Nestled on the cobbled Victoria Street, on the way down towards Grassmarket, Demijohn is one of three shops, the other two situated in Glasgow and York. It’s just coming up to their busiest time of the year; the friendly sales assistant we spoke to explained on the weekends leading up to Christmas, it was likely that there will be queues out the door. “Who would have thought the Seville Orange Gin would be so popular!” he cried, as he whipped white tissue paper around our bottle.

If you’re looking to buy a gift for the person who has everything, or even to just drink in the cosy atmosphere, Demijohn is an ideal stop-off on this year’s Christmas shop.

Perfect for… a Christmas present for your Mum.

Try… a seasonal bottle of Mulled Wine to see in those cold winter nights.
