Best Tip for Exams: De-stress with Dogs

Exams are upon us and, as per usual, the sun has found its way to St Andrews just in time for our self-imposed library solitude. Nerves are tightly wound. You’re gnashing your teeth over the time lost by May Dip and May Ball hangovers and avoiding eye contact with that friend whose only topic of conversation this week is spider diagrams.

Luckily, there are several ways to alleviate your stress, including puppies. This May, St. Andrews has followed the lead (LOL) of Edinburgh and Aberdeen and indulged in some puppy therapy. First Andrew Melville hosted the bundles of love and on Monday the newly formed Guide Dogs Soc hosted the Puppy Rooms in collaboration with Nightline. The new society wants to raise £5,000 to pay for a guide dog’s first year of training and to name the lucky pup beneficiary! Could we have a canine Agnes Blackadder coming to visit us soon?

I spent fifteen minutes playing with Fingal, a six month old black Labrador, who was just one of the dogs brought to the Salad Bowl for socialising, an important part of his training programme. His trainer told us about the many different situations puppies must be comfortable in and learning stages they go: “I think of this part as puppy high school, but soon I’ll have to say goodbye to him when he goes off to guide dog university!”

If you missed out, fear not! There’s another Puppy Event on Friday. However, if that isn’t enough to calm you down, there are plenty of ways to relax amid revision.

Life Drawing

Today is the last session of the year. Go to the Barron Theatre for an hour or two at 7.45 for chilled out music and some meditative sketching. There’s no pressure to show anyone your work if you just want to doodle – or get messy with chalk, paint, or clay. 

Yoga

Stretch your muscles and compose your mind! Classes at the sports centre are finished now, but there are still plenty of options.

TV Marathon

Settle down at the start of the week and catch up on Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and Made in Chelsea.

Soak Your Friends 

What better way to procrastinate than throwing buckets of water and glitter over your classmates? Take videos of them shivering and forget about your own impending ordeal.

Treat yo’ self 

Think about what makes you happy and do it. Bored of looking at your laptop as you type away all day? Try a Hepburn’s Manicure. Tired of 1413 paninis? Have a browse of some good food blogs and whip up a storm in the kitchen at the end of the day.

Try to enjoy your last month in the Bubble this year!
