Can’t Miss Cafés: Study Week Special

We all know that feeling, when you leave the library after a particularly long slog, bleary eyed with a stack of eros coffee cups balanced precariously on your laptop (because, when faced with the imminent death by revision, suddenly lap tops become less important) and in desperate need of some ibuprofen. All you crave is another caffeine fix, although you know after your 10th one you will never get to sleep. Whilst there are many eligible coffee shops in St Andrews where you could go to get your next hit, I want to take you away on a little coffee shop tour of the world to ease your exam woes. Whether you want to day dream you’re in the middle of New York talking to a particularly handsome barista about symbolism in Milton, or you’re looking for inspiration over the mercifully exam free summer, I can guarantee that there will be a coffee shop on here that will make you forget all about short loans and all-nighters spent wilting in the silent section, even just for a little while…

Cafe Lalo, 201 West 83rd Street (at Amsterdam Avenue, New York.)2

Number one on my list is Cafe Lalo. Nestled in the heart of New York, it offers a little sliver of Parisian delight in the middle of the busiest city in the world. It is a spacious cafe, so no need to worry about a shortage of seats, with massive marble tables where you can spread out all of your notes in a cozy little nest around you. To coach you through your revision, you can choose from a huge range of cakes and pastries that you can munch as loudly as you want…

Urban Station, Buenos Aires 2a

Second on my list is in response to the ‘Great Library Plug Shortage of 2014-15’. Urban Station in Buenos Aires is a brand new space for mobile workers that combines a cafe with an office, providing each ‘table’ with wifi, stationary, plenty of study space and most importantly…electrical outlets (GASP). The space is also equipped with printers, scanners and photocopiers as well as bikes you can borrow to relax, take a break from studying and work off the calories from Cafe Lalo.

Dreamy Camera Cafe, Yangpyeyong, South Korea1

This one is for all you camera lovers (and I know there are many in St Andrews). Imagine drinking a wonderful, world-renowned iced Americano as the golden sun streams across your beautifully penned notes. Imagine the serene feeling as you gaze out of a massive camera lens at the breathtaking scenery before you, feeling like you’re on top of the world. Just 10 minutes in this beautiful cafe will make you feel like you can achieve anything, perhaps even reading and absorbing every single article in your recommended reading list the night before your exam…

Maison De Moggy, Edinburgh2b

Okay, so this one is by far my favourite on my list. Having been there myself, I can tell you that the carrot cake is worth enduring even the worst allergies for, and the coffee is a wonderful accompaniment to a warm cuddle from one of their beautiful CATS. YES, CATS. A CAT CAFE. Not only do you get to pet the cats, and give them little treats, there is also (squee!) a KITTEN ROOM downstairs with a student favourite…FAIRY LIGHTS! ’Kitten Room’ vs ‘Safe Pod’, I’ll let you decide…

Merci Cafe, Paris2c

You know that scene in Beauty and the Beast when the beast shows Belle his library? you know? the one that led you to believe libraries would always be that wonderful and breath taking with ladders you could whiz about on? This cafe is the real-life version. It is crammed full of books, and not in a way that causes a bout of self-loathing and panic, but in a way that is soothing to the soul. It is pricey, but their lemon drizzle cake has been described as the ‘best in Paris.’ if you are, however, broke, they squeeze refreshing mint into their tap water. My tip would be to sit there for hours enjoying mint water and ploughing through the millions of books idly ignoring your pervading sense of doom…
