Once frequented by Hugh Grant who allegedly became err.. quite friendly with a couple of female students a few years back, Ma Bells’ appeal to students can only be described as sporadic. Sometimes there are queues out the door, other nights it’s so dead that it’s almost a good place to study. It does have a delicious array of reasonably priced cocktails and DJ nights on weekdays. In the past, it’s hosted events by The Lumsden Club, DONT WALK, as well as the University of St Andrews Sailing Club. Most nights, entry is free, but if an event is going on, there may be a small charge.
Ma Bells, 40 The Scores. Open seven days a week, 12pm – 12am (Monday-Wednesday and Sunday) and until 1am (Thursday –Saturday).
Price range… More than The Lizard, less than Number Forty.
Perfect for… drinking lychee cocktails in a lively atmosphere with everyone you’ve ever met.
Avoid if… you don’t like waiting in queues, particularly for drinks and the toilet.
